We rolled up to Olympia early this morning for an important date with the famous first lady of the Tiny House movement, Dee Williams. She was incredibly warm & gracious, welcoming us into her modest, petite home & sharing her building experiences with us. We picked her brain for a few hours & then headed to the in-progress house her friend is building:
Why all this small living curiosity? -Well, we've decided that what we really want to do with our summer 2010 is spend every last free moment building a mobile, tiny house in our driveway with the goal of eventually siting the finished structure out at our Oregon coast property (1/2 hour from the coast counts, right?).M has been spear-heading the R&D aspect of the project (I've obviously got other things on my plate) & we hope to be fully ready to build as soon as the rain slows to a drizzle. Dee is starting a consulting company with a friend of hers and they have expressed a willingness to let us be their first clients/guinea pigs. They have even offered to host a Portland-area workshop during which they would help us build the floor, provided the timing works for all us us (the trailer-to-house connection seems like the trickiest bit!). Any assistance we can get will help immensely, seeing as M isn't exactly the handiest dude on the planet. But he's truly excited to learn & the thought of building a small house of our very own thrills me too.

What a cool adventure! Are you doing the build-it-yourself option? Seems to save a lot of money - perhaps that will inspire the development of handy talents?:) Does it come with an instruction manual?
We are building it ourselves, and while we're not using this plan exactly, we intend to do something very similar. We are actually hoping to build for less than $15K by sourcing our materials primarily from CL or the Rebuilding Center. And no, no instructions. We're going to pretty much wing it. M thinks he can draw his own plans, (with Dee's help). We shall see...
