monster baby

The public health nurse came for another visit today. X now weighs a whopping 19lbs & 11oz and measures approximately 27.5 inches. This puts him in the 90th percentile for both. But his head is apparently "off the charts" in 99th percentile land, measuring a worrisome 18 5/8 inches. She freaked me out a little, insisting that it was her professional responsibility to notify my pediatrician since large head size can be an indicator of serious brain issues like hydranencephaly and other scary, impossible-to-spell (much less pronounce) diseases.

She put in a call but then assured me that in every other way X is a normal, healthy, happy-seeming baby --and that most of those terrifying diseases have other horrible symptoms, like poor development, etc. The doctor's nurse called back and didn't seem alarmed, which was a relief. She said that large head size can just run in the family. M did some investigating and it turns out his dad has a hard time finding hats that fit, a clear indicator of fat-headedness.

I don't think X's head looks overly large, but perhaps it is just disguised by all that impossibly crazy hair. Maybe if he were as bald as a cue ball he would look alarmingly disproportionate. In any case, I am just telling myself that his head needs to be big in order to hold the massive, genius brain he's got growing inside.
